The Phoenix Mercury is set to wrap up a back-to-back slate on its schedule as the team looks to rebound off of a disappointing 70-47 loss to the Connecticut Sun on Tuesday with a game tonight vs. the New York Liberty.

Before the Mercury faces the Liberty, however, head coach Nate Tibbetts revealed some positive news regarding the injury statuses of both Brittney Griner and Sug Sutton.

During the pregame press conference, Tibbetts said that Sutton would be available for selection after not playing on Tuesday with a right ankle injury.

For Griner, Tibbetts stated that her recovery progression from a toe fracture on her left foot is progressing and her out of a boot gives Phoenix confidence she will return sooner rather than later.

“Well it is good to see her without the boot, so we are heading in the right direction,” Tibbetts said. “I think it has been good for her mentally to get out of the boot. Every day we are getting closer, I know she can’t wait and we can’t wait.”

While Tibbetts didn’t clarify a specific timeline of when to expect Griner back to playing again, this is a positive sign that is pointing in the right direction. The nine-time WNBA All-Star last played on May 7 in an 85-59 preseason loss to the Seattle Storm.

Griner has yet to play this season after sustaining her injury on May 13 and has remained on the sidelines since. She was seen out of her boot at last Saturday’s practice, but was right back in it that night when the Mercury and Dallas Wings clashed.
