Diamondbacks shutout in Spring Training opener, Rockies win 3-0

With the first crack of the bat to start the 2024 MLB preseason at Salt River Fields in Scottsdale, the Arizona Diamondbacks fell to the Colorado Rockies 3-0 Friday afternoon.

Elehuris Montero hit a solo homerun while Jordan Beck and Drew Romo had an RBI each in the Rockies’ (1-0) victory. Brenton Doyle was 2-for-2 at the plate with a pair of singles.

Colorado starting pitcher Carson Palmquist threw 2.0 shutout innings with one hit, one walk and four strikeouts.

In 2.0 innings as well, Diamondbacks (0-1) starter Tommy Henry was near-perfect, allowing zero runs, just one hit and striking out four Rockies.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning when Colorado’s offense started to click.

Montero homered to left field off of Arizona reliever Chris Rodriguez, giving the Rockies a 1-0 lead.

Then in the next bottom of the fifth, Romo made it 2-0 after a line drive single towards the right and Trejo crossed home plate.

Beck slapped a two-out RBI double before Grant Lavigne scored, increasing the margin to 3-0 Colorado in the bottom of the seventh. The Rockies recorded seven hits in the ballgame.

Blaze Alexander led the Arizona in hits, going 2-for-2 as the Diamondbacks had five total hits.

Christian Walker and Ketel Marte both went 1-for-2 in the matinee. Eugenio Suárez, Geraldo Perdomo and Gabriel Moreno all finished 0-for-2.

Both teams will play each other again at 1:10 p.m. MST.
