Diving Into Arizona’s Top Five Ranked Varsity Boys Soccer Teams

Today, I will be talking about the state’s top five Varsity Boys soccer teams according to MaxPreps.

#1: Sunnyside (11-0), 6A

The Sunnyside Blue Devils have undoubtedly been the most dominant team this season. They are undefeated through 11 games and have outscored opponents 72-8.  The team has scored 6+ goals in all but two games to start the season and have been nothing short of elite on both sides of the ball. The Blue Devils are coming off a season where they went 14-5-1 but were knocked out in the 6A playoff quarterfinals by the eventual champion Perry Pumas. They stand alone as the state’s top team as of right now and should be a favorite to take home the 6A championship this season.

#2: Corona del Sol (10-0), 6A

The Corona del Sol Aztecs are also undefeated to start the season. While they haven’t quite been scoring at the level of Sunnyside, the Aztecs are winning in dominating fashion and have allowed just six goals in 10 games. However, they have done something that no other top-five-ranked team has done this season and that is defeating a fellow top-five-ranked team. The Aztecs gave the No. 5 ranked Ironwood Eagles their only loss of the season in a 2-1 victory in late November. After going just 5-11-2 last season and missing the 6A playoffs entirely, Corona has turned a corner and become a top team in the state this season with an opportunity at a championship.

#3: Mesa (7-0-1), 6A

The Mesa Jackrabbits are another team that has yet to take a loss this season. After drawing 0-0 with the San Luis Sidewinders in their very first game of the season, the Jackrabbits have won seven straight. They have locked down opponents, giving up just four goals in eight games. They have also shut out their opponent in six of the eight games. Mesa is coming off a season where they went 14-6-2 and lost in the second round of the playoffs to Tuscon High. While the Jackrabbits have not scored as dominantly as the top two teams, they are playing tremendous defense and should be one of the top favorites for the 6A championship this season.

#4: Salpointe Catholic (7-0-1), 4A

Similar to the first three, the Salpointe Catholic Lancers have yet to lose through their first eight games. They have outscored opponents 29-9 and have scored 3+ goals in every game but one this season. The Lancers are led by star junior forward Leo Gutierrez. Guiterrez has been among the most dominant strikers in the entire state this season, scoring 21 of the team’s 29 goals thus far. Salpointe went 23-2 last season and won the 4A championship. They have not lost a step and should again be considered the favorite to take home the 4A title.

#5: Ironwood (8-1), 5A

The Ironwood Eagles are the only top-five-ranked team that has lost a game this season. However, it was to Corona del Sol and the team has dominated otherwise. Ironwood has outscored opponents 40-8 this season and six different players on the team have accounted for 4+ goals. The Eagles are coming off a dominating season where they finished 21-2-1 and made it to the 5A championship but fell short 4-1 to the Horizon Huskies. The team has more motivation than ever after their championship loss and should again be looked upon as favorites in the 5A.
