The Mercury just came off of one of their worst seasons yet as a franchise as they finished the season 9-31 which was the worst record in the WNBA.
New general manager Nick U’Ren and owner Mat Ishbia have made it clear that they want to bring championship-level basketball back to the Valley for the Mercury. They both released a statement on welcoming Nate to the Mercury family as the 12th all-time head coach for the franchise.

Ishbia is on a mission to make Phoenix in his words “the epicenter of basketball” this season. With the Suns in contention for possibly an NBA championship this season, both U’Ren and Ishbia believe that Tibbett’s insight can get the Mercury back as favorites in the WNBA.

We’ll see if this ends up being the hire that works out for the Mercury. But it’s safe to say that Ishbia has kept himself busy so far this year in doing everything to turn the city of Phoenix around.
