If Mike Trout Hits the Market, Do the Diamondbacks Pursue Him?

© Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

On Sunday September tenth, the Los Angeles Angels declared if Mike Trout asks for a trade, they will part ways at the right price.  Trout has been one of, if not the, best player in the MLB for quite some time. The 32 year old center fielder has won three mvps, and is an eleven-time all star. Trout has been in Anaheim for the entirety of his thirteen year career in the bigs.

It has been known that Trout is very loyal to the Angels. Throughout his career Trout has done everything in his power to make the team successful. Despite only making the playoffs one time in his career. Mike Trout was a big reason the Angels acquired their other star, Shohei Ohtani, who hits the market as a free agent this off-season.

People around the Angels have rumored that Ohtani’s decision whether to return to the team or not will heavily impact Trouts. There is just one thing about that statement. Ohtani wants to win, whether it’s in Anaheim or not. Arizona is in a great position for the future, and could use veteran leadership from a Mike Trout. But, I could only imagine the Diamondbacks would have to involve a few good prospects in order to get Trout.

Is Trout worth the potential asking price?

Mike Trout is undoubtedly great. The resumé he has built over his career speaks for itself. Trout is not 27 years old anymore, though. Mike Trout has played in just 82 games this season, hitting .263 in his 308 at bats. Trout signed a massive contract with Angeles five season ago, that still has seven years and roughly $250 million left on it. The only way I could see another team picking up Trout is if Arte Moreno eats a bunch of that contract. A player the caliber of what Trout can possibly be, would require a team dumping quite a few prospects. The big question is, is he worth that?
