Turnovers prove costly in Cardinals 20-16 loss

After a promising first half led by the defense, the Arizona Cardinals failed to find any sort of offensive rhythm against the Commanders, resulting in a 20-16 season opener loss.

At one point, the Cardinals had five straight offensive plays that ended in negative yardage.

Yet somehow, Arizona still managed to lead 16-10 up until the 1 minute mark of the 3rd quarter.

It was a Sam Howell six-yard QB run that gave the Commanders their first lead of the second half.

Meanwhile, the Cardinals final five drives combined for just 30 total yards. In this span, two of the drives ended with a punt, two ended with a fumble, and the final one ended with a turnover on downs.

Arizona’s defense did just about all it could, including three takeaways, six sacks, and scoring the Cardinals lone touchdown.

However, when an offense produces just 211 total yards, winning a game is near impossible.

Joshua Dobbs went 21/30 from the air for just 133 yards, which comes out to 4.3 yards per attempt. The Cardinals leading receiver was Rondale Moore, who had 31 of his 33 yards come on one play.

Next up for the Cardinals will be a matchup at home against the New York Giants next Sunday at 1:05 PM.
