After once holding a three-game lead over the Dodgers for first place in the NL West, the Diamondbacks would not even make the playoffs if the season ended today.

When things seem like they cannot get worse for Arizona, they do. If the offense is going well, the pitching is not. If the pitching is good, the offense is quiet.

And this cycle was put on full display today as the Diamondbacks fell to the Cardinals with a final score of 11-7.

With the NL’s leading CY Young candidate, Zac Gallen, on the mound, Arizona was hoping for just their second series victory in the month of July.

However, the Cardinals’ offense had a different idea as they chased Gallen out of the game in the 7th inning, leaving the Diamondbacks’ ace accountable for five earned runs on seven hits.

And following Gallen’s departure, things really started to unravel for the Diamondbacks. Against Arizona’s struggling bullpen, St. Louis tacked on six more runs on eight more hits to put the game out of reach.

In total, the Cardinals were one shy of a season record with a whopping six home runs. Four of these came in the sixth inning or later.

While the Diamondbacks offense was also red hot, matching the Cardinals with 15 hits, nine runners left on base proved costly.

Whether it was a leadoff triple in the first inning that did not score, or a double to start the 4th, Arizona stabbed themselves multiple times in the back.

Next up for the Diamondbacks is a three-game series against the Mariners. This series will begin Friday at 6:40 PM with Tommy Henry on the mound.
