The Arizona Diamondbacks have placed SP Zach Davies on the 15-day IL due to lower back inflammation. In return, Joe Mantiply has been called up from Triple-A Reno.

This news comes after another disastrous start from Davies, who allowed nine earned runs in 3.2 innings against the Braves on Tuesday. While the Diamondbacks did end up pulling away in the end, snapping a four-game losing streak, Davies’ ERA soared to 7.38 on the season.

But with Davies now on the IL, the D-backs now have only three official starting pitchers on their depth chart. Most likely, it will be Brandon Pfaadt getting the call, as Arizona will also be without Merrill Kelly for at least one more week.

Pfaadt is coming off a terrific month in the Pacific Coast League, his 3-0 record and 3.16 ERA in June earned him Pitcher of the Month honors.

In the meantime, the Diamondbacks will have to rely heavily on their bullpen, which includes Joe Mantiply, who has been pulled up from Triple-A for the third time this season.

With the D-backs this year, Mantiply has made 13 appearances and has posted a 5.74 ERA in this span.

Stay tuned for further updates.
