Brandon Pfaadt named Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Month

With Brandon Pfaadt being named Pitcher of the Month and Dominic Canzone being named Player of the Month, the Reno Aces swept June’s Pacific Coast League awards.

Brandon Pfaadt

In five starts, Pfaadt posted a 3-0 record with a 3.16 ERA. The 24-year-old walked just five batters while also striking out 28 (2nd best in the league).

However, Pfaadt’s success at the minor league level hasn’t translated to major league success. And for the Diamondbacks, this has hurt them immensely this season.

With Merrill Kelly placed on the IL, the D-backs pulled up Pfaadt for one start against the Rays on June 29th. He would go on to barely make it out of the second inning as he allowed six earned runs on seven hits and two walks.

The Diamondbacks went on to lose this game 6-1, which brought Pfaadt’s season record in the majors to 0-3. His ERA also spiked to 9.82 through six starts.

Dominic Canzone

On the other hand, Dominic Canzone, who was drafted in the 8th round of the 2019 draft by the Diamondbacks, has not yet gotten the call up to the bigs, despite an impressive season down with the Aces.

In June, Canzone led the league with a .430 batting average on 34 hits and nine doubles. Canzone’s season batting average is now at .354, and his RBI total is already up to 71.

Dominic Canzone began playing with the Aces last year after spending two years in low-A. It now seems as if it is only a matter of time before the 25-year-old receives the call and makes his major league debut.

Expect to hear plenty more of this name as the Diamondbacks continue to struggle with injuries and other inconsistencies in their lineup.
