Mat Ishbia on State of the Suns: “I Think We Have a Championship-Caliber Team”

After a very eventful offseason for the Suns that saw them trade for Bradley Beal, trade away Chris Paul and Cameron Payne, and sign/re-sign valuable offsets to solidify their bench. Suns owner, Mat Ishbia is finally at a place where he feels like his team doesn’t need to make any more changes to an already stacked roster.

Ishbia joined Arizona Sports’ Burns & Gambo yesterday and discussed the state of his team as free agency is slowly starting to wrap up.

I think our roster is Phenomenal,” he said. “I think our coaching staff is phenomenal, I love our players. I think we have a championship-caliber team as it stands right now. With that being said, I don’t forecast or predict any other moves… We love our team right now. I think the team we have out there well exceeds even what we hoped after the season ended.”

The Suns ended last season in a sad way when they lost to the eventual NBA champion Denver Nuggets in 6 games. This caused the Suns to go in a new direction when they elected to part-ways with Monty Williams and sign Frank Vogel to be their next head coach.

The new-look Suns have made some leeway before free agency began when they traded for Beal to create a big three in Phoenix and it now seems to look like Devin Booker and Deandre Ayton are the only players left from the 2021 NBA Finals run which was only a couple of years ago.

Now they have a team with 3 all-star players, a sixth-man of the year candidate in Eric Gordon as well as two of the top 3 point shooters in the league off the bench in Yuta Watanabe and Damion Lee.

The Suns are hoping to capture their first-ever championship in franchise history. Ishbia believes that his team is one step closer to capturing that goal.
