Gaines is rated as the 903rd player nationally, No. 94 athlete and 66th best player in California by the 247 Sports Composite rankings.

The three-star recruit was recruited as a linebacker by coach AJ Cooper to the Sun Devils, but he also plays running back.

Last season, Gaines played in 11 varsity games and had 27 tackles, five for loss, three sacks and an interception on the defensive side according to MaxPreps. Offensively, he rushed for 855 yards and 16 touchdowns on 89 carries. He also had 49 receptions for 820 yards and nine touchdowns.

See some of his highlights from last season below:

Gaines took two visits to Arizona State, most recently on June 16-18. He also visited them back on March 26. The Sun Devils first offered Gaines earlier this year on Feb. 15.

Gaines originally included Arizona State in his top-six list all the way back on May 19 with Washington State, Washington, Arizona, San Diego State and Boise State. In addition to Arizona State, last month, he also officially visited San Diego State, Washington State and Boise State.

Ultimately, his list was narrowed to three and Gaines chose the Sun Devils over Boise State and Washington State.

Gaines becomes the 17th class of 2024 verbal commit for the Sun Devils, third from California (joins OL Champ Westbrooks and LB Martell Hughes) and third linebacker (joins Hughes and Louisiana’s Albert Smith). He is the first commit since July 4, when both Hughes and Texas CB Chris Johnson Jr. announced their pledges to ASU.
