The self-reported 6-foot-2, 195-pound Hughes is ranked as the 104th best safety and No. 85 player in California by 247 Sports. Even though he has played safety in high school, he is expected to play linebacker at ASU. He was recruited heavily to ASU by linebacker coach AJ Cooper.

Hughes chose the Sun Devils over three other Pac-12 schools: Arizona, Cal and Washington State. He visited Washington State two weekends ago and the other three schools, including Arizona State, each of the three weekends before, first Arizona, then Cal, then ASU.

He told KUSN that he was looking for a “family feel” when he was making his collegiate decision.

“Stepping onto campus, I just felt that home feeling,” Hughes told the news station after he chose ASU. “It felt like a home away from home. All the coaches seem great. They’re really changing the program around. I got to connect with a few of the players, and they really love it there, and I can see myself being there as well.

According to MaxPreps, Hughes played seven varsity games last season and recorded 39 tackles, half a sack and one interception.

Hughes was first offered by ASU on May 10 and officially visited the school on June 16. He becomes the Sun Devils’ second linebacker commit in his class, joining Louisiana product Albert Smith.

Kenny Dillingham hinted that another recruit will be committing later today. Read about who it will probably be by clicking here.

Hughes is the 15th class of 2024 prospect to commit to ASU, and the number will likely grow to 16 by the end of today.
