Arizona State football recruiting news May 19-21

A lot of positive things happened for the ASU football team this weekend (May 19-21), including commitments, being in several recruits’ top schools, promising visits and offers. Burn+ subscribers can check it all out here.

Charlie Ragle and ASU land two recruits

Arizona State special teams coordinator and edge coach Charlie Ragle got two class of 2024 commitments for the Sun Devils within a few hours of each other Sunday. The recruits were three-star edge rusher Albert Smith III (Louisiana) and punter/ kicker Kanyon Floyd from Horizon in Scottsdale. Check out the stories on them below.

Arizona State a finalist for several recruits

Zach Wilson’s little brother, Isaac, who is regarded as a top-15 quarterback in the country, was the first of several recruits to have Arizona State in their top schools this weekend. Read about him below.

Sire Gaines, a 6-foot, 200 pound athlete out of Orange Vista High School (Perris, CA), announced that he is down to six schools, including Arizona State. The three-star recruit was recruited as a linebacker by coach AJ Cooper to the Sun Devils, but he also plays running back. Last season, he played in 11 varsity games and had 27 tackles, five for loss, three sacks and an interception on the defensive side according to MaxPreps. Offensively, he rushed for 855 yards and 16 touchdowns on 89 carries. He also had 49 receptions for 820 yards and nine touchdowns. Click here for his Hudl highlights. 

According to 247 Sports, Gaines will be taking an official visit to ASU on June 16. The other five schools on his list are also out west: Washington State, Washington, Arizona, Boise State and San Diego State. He will make his decision on July 29.

Four-star cornerback Chris Johnson Jr. out of Aledo High School in Texas included Arizona State in his top six schools. Johnson is listed at 6-foot-1 and 180 pounds and is in the class of 2024. His high school won state last season, and Johnson recorded two interceptions, 29.5 tackles, two for loss and had two fumble recoveries for the year. Click here for his Hudl profile.

His father is not Chris Johnson the running back, but rather former Louisville cornerback and 11-year NFL veteran Chris Johnson. He also put SMU, Arkansas, Oregon, Utah and Louisville on his list.

Three-star athlete Jonathan Kabeya, who is from Byron Nelson High School, included Arizona State in his top-five schools. The class of 2024 product is listed at 5-foot-10 and 170 pounds, and he plays both cornerback and running back, but is being recruited as a cornerback. According to MaxPreps, Kabeya had 15 tackles and two interceptions in seven varsity games last season.  Click here to see his Hudl profile.

Visits

Anelu Lafaele, a four-star edge rusher from St. Louis High School in Honolulu, HI, took his official visit to Arizona State this weekend. The class of 2024 rusher is listed at 6-foot-3 and 230 pounds. Click here for his Hudl profile.

Jeff Clark, a redshirt junior transfer from Georgia Southern, visited Arizona State this weekend. He has been recruited to the Sun Devils hard by former high school teammate and current ASU star DL B.J Green (McEachern High School in Georgia). Clark, listed at 6-foot, 276 pounds, had 39 total tackles last season and led the team with 9.5 tackles for loss and was second with 4.5 sacks. His nine career sacks are top 10 in program history.

Offers

Matthew Johnson, a four-star DL in the class of 2025 from De La Salle High School (Concord, CA), announced Saturday that he received an offer from Arizona State. Johnson is 6-foot-5 and 252 pounds, and he had three tackles, one for loss and .5 sacks in three varsity games last season, according to MaxPreps. Click here to see his Hudl profile.
