The San Diego Padres did something rare last night in Phoenix as a road team in 2023, they got a win. The Arizona Diamondbacks have been one of the best home teams early on this season.

After a competitive 5 innings, the D-Backs failed to answer the last surge from the Padres. San Diego broke the tie in the 6th inning scoring two runs, giving them a 7-5 lead. A lead which would end up being the final score.

Padres/Diamondbacks Pitching

Both teams put up a healthy amount of runs by looking at the total alone. The Padres scored runs consistently in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th inning. Even with a 4 run answer from the Diamondbacks in the 4th inning, that was the last scoring the offense would see.

The Padres bullpen completely shut out Arizona the remaining 5 innings of baseball. Both starters got touched up nicely before exiting the game. It was 5-5 by the time either bullpen saw action.

Ryne Nelson got the start in game 1 and pitched 5 innings, striking out 4 batters and only giving up 3 hits. The problem with those hits, 2 of them were home runs. Nelson also walked 3 batters, yet all in all in was a decent outing for the rookie.

Michael Wacha took the bump for the Padres, pitching in his 4th start of the season. He pitched 4 innings, giving up 10 hits and 5 earned runs while striking out 3 batters.

Lack of Timely Hitting

The Diamondbacks recorded 12 hits in the game, 5 more than the Padres. However as mentioned above 10 of those hits came in the first 4 innings. Only two hits against the bullpen, and zero hits in the 7th, 8th, or 9th inning last night.

Arizona left 14 runners on base last night, according to the MLB website’s box card. While Arizona’s bullpen for the latter of the game also shutout the Padres, the D-Backs could not get anything rolling after the 4 inning.
