Kevin Durant Gives Interesting Insight On How NBA Players Fear Opponents Appropriately

© Alonzo Adams- USA TODAY Sports

It shouldn’t shock anybody that everybody is good in the NBA. Any given night, an inferior team can knock out another team if they don’t bring their A game out to the court. There is only 30 teams in the NBA and 450 spots for each player to make maybe less.

It takes a level of confidence in yourself as well as your ability and talent to be able to play night and night out without giving your spot up to somebody else. On a podcast he did recently, Kevin Durant discussed about the appropriate fear that players have for opponents regardless of the name on the back of their jersey.

“There’s an appropriate fear that you have for your opponents, knowing that if you aren’t locked in, this is the NBA. We’re all great players. Somebody can go off and kill you tonight. Let me lock in and be ready. That’s the type of fear that I’m thinking about.”

This same ability applies for a starter that might not be a star player like Kevin Durant going up against a guy like LeBron James or Stephen Curry. Each player doesn’t fear one another based on preparation and confidence in their ability and Durant talks more in depth about that on his podcast.

“When you’re going against the best players, you know, the Michael Jordans, the LeBron James, of course you feel, you know that you’re getting in some s–t tonight. But if you’re locked in and ready for it and you’re prepared for it, I won’t say you’re scared… I wouldn’t say anybody is, like, fearful of the challenge, don’t want to play, ducking guys for the night, call in with an injury. That type of stuff I don’t see much of.”

Suns Can Clinch a Playoff Spot with a Win Tonight vs. Spurs

A similar situation could happen tonight with the Suns and Spurs. The Spurs have no all-stars on their rosters playing tonight as opposed to the Suns but that doesn’t mean they can’t upset them tonight. The Suns will have to bring their a game no matter who their opponent is similar to what Durant said in his podcast.
