AZ Cardinals may elect to cut WR DeAndre Hopkins

While it may seem crazy, there is some belief that the Arizona Cardinals will elect to cut five-time Pro Bowl WR DeAndre Hopkins, per Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated.

Breer stated on the Greg Bedard podcast:

“Some teams think that the Cardinals are going to cut him; they think the Cardinals will wind up cutting him.”

The reasons for this are simple, Hopkins is 30 years old, has played only 19 games in the past two seasons, and whatever team acquires him, will owe Hopkins around $20 million.

“There’s nobody who was willing to take on Hopkins’ contract and pay the Cardinals’ initial asking price.”

On the flip side, if the Cardinals did cut Hopkins, it would save them a boatload of much-needed cash, which they can spend on some defensive weapons.

Arizona originally asked for “hefty compensation” in return for their future Hall of Fame WR; however, it was quickly discovered that they would simply not get that.

After the Dallas Cowboys acquired WR Brandon Cooks for a fifth- and sixth-round draft pick, Hopkins’ value decreased significantly.

As of now, the Kansas City Chiefs and the New England Patriots are the frontrunners in expressing their interest in D-hop. However, both teams have noted that they would be willing to pay, “way way less,” per Breer.

The Cardinals did give other teams permission to speak with Hopkins last week, meaning, it is only a matter of time before he finds his desired destination.

Stay tuned for more updates.
