On the NBA countdown back on Wednesday before Durant made his NBA debut with the Suns, Stephen A. Smith was asked a question about whether he believes the Suns are the best team in the Western Conference. His answer may make some Suns fans a little mad.

“No. Not yet I’m not going to disrespect the Denver Nuggets by saying that. Eventually, they could be but you ain’t going to come out of the gate looking better than the Denver Nuggets.”

Since this comment, the Suns are 2-0 in Durant’s first two games playing with the team and Devin Booker is averaging 36 points per game. It’s early in the process but the Suns are looking every bit the scary title contender that they envisioned when they traded for Durant.

They’re currently sitting at 4th in the Western Conference with the Denver Nuggets still holding the one-seed comfortably as they are ahead of the Suns by 10 games. Nikola Jokic is looking like an MVP frontrunner yet again as he is looking to bring home his third MVP in a row.

Stephen A. Smith alluded to why he firmly believes the Denver Nuggets are the frontrunner as opposed to the Phoenix Suns who have been playing well as of late.

“Denver has been too formidable, they got a leading MVP candidate in Jokic, and we’ve seen the elevation of Jamal Murray, Michael Porter Jr, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, and the rest of the crew. We see what’s going on, we’re not going to say that yet.”

Deandre Ayton QUESTIONABLE; Terrence Ross PROBABLE Tomorrow vs. Mavs

With a good showing against the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday, maybe the new look Phoenix Suns can change Stephen A. Smith’s mind about who he thinks the best team in the West is. However, we won’t truly know until the playoff officially begin.
