Mercury use Strong Start to Beat Liberty 84-81

The Phoenix Mercury closed out the first half of the season with an 84-81 win over the New York Liberty. Phoenix never trailed in the game. Skylar Diggins-Smith hit four free throws down the stretch of the game to help the Mercury keep the lead. Diggins-Smith finished with 13 points and nine assists.

Diana Taurasi finished with 23 points while hitting four three-point shots. Taurasi became the first player in WNBA history to make 3,000 field goals for her career. Sophie Cunningham had an outstanding game for the Mercury, scoring 23 points on 10-15 shooting from the field, whole 3-8 three-pointers. She also added five rebounds.

Shedy Peddy added 13 points for Phoenix. The Mercury shot 40.9% from the field and 30% from the three-point line. Phoenix was outrebounded 40-30, but their free throwing shooting helped the Mercury win the game. Phoenix shot 21-24 from the free-throw line.

Sabrina Ionescu led New York in scoring with 22 points and grabbed ten rebounds. Stefanie Dolson and Natasha Howard both scored 16 points, while Sami Whitcomb scored 12 points off the bench.

The Mercury did a good job being aggressive and getting to the free-throw line. Phoenix got off to a good start and led by 16 at one point of the game. They did a good job fighting off the Liberty the rest of the way.

The Mercury finished the first half of the season 10-14 and don’t play again until July 12th in Minnesota against the Lynx.
