The Phoenix Suns have been linked in trade rumors with the Miami Heat for their star small forward Jimmy Butler for Bradley Beal. The trade would make sense for both teams for a number of reasons.
The Suns Big 3 have yet to be able to stay healthy and play at the same time together for long stretches. Additionally, Beal still has two years left on his contract and is due to make $57 million if he picks up his player option in 2026-27. Butler meanwhile will be a free agent this off season and Miami would like to get something in return if he were to leave.
The trade also makes sense for Phoenix as far as the fit with the team. Butler is much better defender than Beal and doesn’t need nearly as many shot attempts to be impactful in a game. He’d be able to play off ball from Kevin Durant and Devin Booker, something that Beal has struggled with at time.
However, there are better fits out there for the Suns that they should explore first before going after Butler. Phoenix could use a stretch big that can rebound and defend. Utah’s Lauri Markkanen, Grizzlies’ Jaren Jackson Jr. or Indiana’s Myles Turner would all be much better fits. If they can’t make a deal work there, Phoenix should still try and swap out Beal for Butler. But the Suns need to check around the league and see if there is a better deal, and a better fit, to be had first.
