On X (formerly Twitter), former Arizona State pitcher Thomas Burns announced that he has recently committed to Texas.

“I would like to thank everyone at Arizona State for the greatest opportunity. With that being said I am going to the University of Texas,” Burns said.

Coming out of Hortonville (Wis.) High School in 2023, Burns was one of the top players from Wisconsin before he ended up committing to ASU. In his senior season with the Polar Bears, he owned both a 0.86 ERA and 8-1 record which sparked the interest of the Sun Devils recruiting him.

Making the jump to the next level in college, the right-hander’s freshman year was a mixed bag that ended abruptly.

As Arizona State’s ace, he pitched five innings in which he allowed just a run on one hit with seven strikeouts in his debut against Santa Clara. Burns would then struggle in his last start when he gave up five runs on seven hits in 4.2 innings vs. Washington State.

The 6-foot-3, 210-pounder then suffered a bicep injury that ultimately ended his freshman season. Burns finished his one-year stint at ASU with a 1-1 record, 4.75 ERA and 49 strikeouts in six starts where he threw 30.1 innings.

Switching to Texas, he joins first-year head coach Jim Schlossnagle’s squad who were 36-24 overall and 20-10 in the Big 12 last season. Just as ASU is joining the Big 12 this upcoming season, the Longhorns departed from the conference and are now a new member of the SEC.

Burns still has three years left of eligibility left.
