The Diamondbacks pitching staff takes another injury, with reliever Kevin Ginkel having to leave his relief appearance after getting struck in the left leg by a Brandon Nimmo comebacker. The ball left Nimmo’s bat at 98.3 MPH and ricocheted off the inside of Ginkel’s left knee. The 30-year-old reliever collapsed on the mound but was able to walk off the field under his own power. Bryce Jarvis entered the game to get the final out of the sixth inning.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! It’s been a tough year for Ginkel, whose spring was slow-played due to elbow inflammation. One of the Diamondbacks’ top relievers in 2023, he hasn’t been as sharp with a 4.29 ERA in 22 appearances. His velocity was down to start the season, but a recent mechanical change has it back to the 96 MPH range.
Starting out as the interim closer while Paul Sewald was on the injured list, Ginkel was 5-for-7 in ninth inning save opportunities. He resumed his primary setup role when Sewald was activated from the IL, but had struggled since.
The bullpen has endured some tough injuries of late. Left-hander Kyle Nelson is out for the season after undergoing thoracic outlet surgery. Miguel Castro and Luis FrÃas are on the injured list with shoulder injuries, although FrÃas pitched a scoreless inning in a rehab appearance at the complex Saturday.
The Diamondbacks await to see the extent of the injury and how long Ginkel could be out. Stay tuned for more updates.
