PORTLAND — The Phoenix Suns have a relatively healthy injury report ahead of their first game of the 2026-27 season, while the Portland Trail Blazers could be without one of their most important players to start the year.

Suns guard Luke Kennard was listed as questionable with left knee tendinopathy, but following Tuesday’s practice, Phoenix coach Jordan Ott expressed optimism about Kennard’s progress, suggesting the guard could make his regular-season debut Wednesday night. Center Mark Williams was ruled out with a left shoulder injury.

Meanwhile, the Trail Blazers added a significant name to their injury report: All-Star Deni Avdija.

Avdija is listed as questionable with right ankle soreness, and his status could have a major impact on Portland’s opening-night plans. Known for his ability to score, create opportunities for teammates and attack the basket, Avdija provides a versatile offensive presence that would be difficult to replace if he can’t play.

The All-Star’s most recent matchup against the Suns came during last season’s play-in tournament on April 14, when he scored 41 points and recorded 12 assists to lead Portland to a 114-110 victory. The Trail Blazers overcame an 11-point fourth-quarter deficit, with Avdija playing a central role in the comeback.

If Avdija is unavailable Wednesday, Portland will need other players to take on expanded scoring and playmaking responsibilities against Phoenix.

Kennard’s progress gives the Suns reason for optimism as they prepare to open the season, but Portland’s plans could depend on whether Avdija is healthy enough to play. His potential absence would leave a significant void in the Trail Blazers’ offense against a Phoenix team looking to start the year off right.

The Suns and Trail Blazers tip off Wednesday, Oct. 21, at 7 p.m.
