When Pat McAfee started gushing over the play and invoking names like Matthew Stafford and Aaron Rodgers, the significance wasn’t that Beck suddenly belongs in the same class as established NFL stars. The meaning is that McAfee recognized a trait associated with elite quarterbacks, which is the ability to create something outside the structure of the play.

There is a difference between a young QB making one impressive throw and repeatedly showing traits that make people start watching him, and Beck appears to be entering that territory. Beck has been turning heads throughout training camp, but his no-look pass at Red & White Practice created a different kind of buzz. The throw showcased anticipation, confidence and the willingness to manipulate a defense without staring down his target.

That’s the part Cardinals fans should care about. Beck’s debut in the NFL Hall of Fame Game provided another encouraging point. Instead of asking whether Beck can survive the NFL, fans are beginning to wonder how high his ceiling might actually be. When a national football personality like McAfee starts losing it over the rookie, Arizona’s quarterback story becomes much bigger than a training-camp highlight.
