According to El Extrabase’s Daniel Alvarez-Montes, former D-Backs catcher Jose Herrera has signed a minor league contract with the Texas Rangers.
Herrera, 28, spent more than a decade in the Arizona organization after signing as an amateur free agent. He made his major league debut in 2021 and served primarily as a backup catcher during his time with the club, providing defensive reliability when needed.

The Venezuelan-born catcher hit .200 with a .539 OPS in his Diamondbacks career. He totaled three home runs and tied for sixth in franchise history with 27 sacrifice hits.
Herrera was designated for assignment during the 2025 season after fellow catcher Gabriel Moreno returned from injury in August.

With Moreno established as the team’s primary catcher, Adrian Del Castillo pushing for increased major league opportunities and James McCann re-signing for another season, Arizona has limited roster flexibility to retain Herrera.
The Rangers add catching depth with Herrera, who brings major league experience and veteran familiarity with pitching staffs.

The move gives Texas a low-risk addition while providing Herrera an opportunity to work his way back to the majors.
