Facing the Los Angeles Dodgers for the second time in the World Series, Yesavage pitched seven innings, struck out 12 and allowed only one run. He became only the third pitcher in history to strike out every batter in the opposing team’s starting lineup in a World Series game. The first was Bob Gibson in 1968.
The second? Diamondbacks legend Randy Johnson.

Yesavage’s performance revived Randy Johnson’s Game 2 outing in the 2001 Fall Classic, when the “Big Unit” struck out 11 batters over nine shutout innings. Johnson played a pivotal role in Arizona’s first championship and delivered one of the best World Series pitching performances in history.
Now, almost a quarter of a century later, Yesavage put on nearly an identical pitching performance as he joined Johnson and Gibson as the only pitchers to achieve the feat.

As a 22-year-old who began the year in Single-A with the Toronto organization, Yesavage is delivering veteran-type performances this postseason. Amid the chaos of the major leagues, the rookie has honed his craft and now finds himself in the history books with less than a full year in MLB.
While the Blue Jays still have one more win to claim their first championship since 1993, Yesavage’s performance on the mound this postseason, particularly in Game 5 of the World Series, will be remembered for years.

Regardless of the outcome, Yesavage has proved that hard work and dedication can take you far. Whether it’s in front of 300 people or a sold-out World Series crowd, age doesn’t matter to be great.
The Blue Jays and Dodgers will face off in Game 6 of the World Series on Friday, Oct. 31, at 5 p.m.
