PHOENIX — The Phoenix Suns’ latest blow has fans debating how the team should respond to losing their starting center.

Mark Williams underwent surgery Thursday to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder after suffering the injury during an offseason workout. The 24-year-old is expected to miss around five months, according to Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro.

The news comes just before training camp and preseason, with Williams among the many returning players from last year’s group. The front office seemingly wanted continuity to be a major factor in its plans this season, making the timing of Williams’ injury even more significant.

Williams signed a three-year, $38 million contract with Phoenix this season after a solid year in the Valley. In 2025-26, the center averaged 11.7 points, eight rebounds and one assist in 60 games. His strong rim protection and length are among the biggest strengths he brings to the lineups he’s part of.

Now, with Williams out for a significant amount of time, Suns fans hope this setback could give other players a chance to step up.

Depth will no doubt be an important storyline for Phoenix this season, especially with the team looking to build on the foundation it established last year. The Suns will have to rely on some of the pieces they’ve retained, as well as the new additions they’ve brought in, to help fill the void.

The immediate question is whether the existing roster is capable of taking on Williams’ role or whether the front office should explore another addition. That could become one of the biggest discussions surrounding the team as training camp gets underway.

The uncertainty creates an opportunity to see what the team’s other options can provide. Whether the answer comes from within the roster or Phoenix ultimately looks elsewhere, the next few weeks should offer an early indication of how the team plans to move forward without Williams.

Until then, the conversation among Suns supporters will continue to center on one question: Who can step up and help fill the void left by their starting center?
