SAN FRANCISCO — The idea of Devin Booker wearing anything other than a Phoenix Suns uniform is difficult to imagine, much less so after the organization has publicly stated he wouldn’t be going anywhere.
However, for the Golden State Warriors, trying to trade for the All-Star is still a scenario worth monitoring.

Warriors insider Tim Kawakami of The San Francisco Standard recently suggested that Golden State would be “first in line” if Booker ever became available, making clear just how highly the Warriors view the Suns’ franchise cornerstone.
“I think the Warriors like him too much if you ask me. But they love him. Steve [Kerr] loves him,” Kawakami said on the Warriors Plus/Minus podcast.

“Booker loved playing for Steve. … They [Golden State] love Devin Booker. … Listen he obviously loves Phoenix, he’s signed long-term. They say they’re never trading him … But if that plays out in a poor way, they’ve traded every draft pick. How do they get draft picks back? How do they restart? I know the Warriors would be first in line saying, ‘We got three first-round picks we can give you, and what else do you want?'”
Kawakami’s comments also highlight the connection between Booker and Golden State. As he noted, Booker has a relationship with Kerr after playing under him with USA Basketball. Booker has also spent time around the Warriors’ core through his years with Team USA, giving him a familiarity with Kerr and several of Golden State’s players.

That connection, combined with the possibility of Booker playing alongside the Warriors’ own cornerstone in Steph Curry, has made a potential Booker-to-Golden State scenario a dream for many fans over the years. But there is a significant difference between imagination and believing Phoenix would actually allow it to happen.
Booker’s importance to the Suns goes well beyond his production on the court. He has spent his entire NBA career in Phoenix, becoming the face of the franchise through multiple roster constructions and different eras of Suns basketball. From the team’s run to the 2021 NBA Finals to its more recent attempts to build a championship roster around him, Booker has remained the constant.

That’s ultimately what makes the Warriors’ reported interest worth noting. It is not a sign that Booker is on his way out of Phoenix. If anything, it underscores why the Suns have been so adamant about keeping him.
Until that changes, the Warriors can be first in line if they want. The Suns have made it clear they aren’t planning to let their All-Star go anywhere.
