PHOENIX — Worry swept around the Arizona Diamondbacks faithful as All-Star Corbin Carroll was pulled in the ninth inning of the club’s series finale against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Carroll was slated to hit at the bottom of the ninth, but instead, outfielder Jorge Barrosa stepped into the batter’s circle to warm up. According to Arizona Central’s Nick Piecoro, the All-Star appeared to have hurt himself in a previous at-bat.
With the game tied and without one of their power bats, Diamondbacks fans were left wondering what happened and just how serious Carroll’s injury could be.

The Snakes eventually rallied in extra innings, with Max Kepler delivering the decisive hit to bring in Barrosa as the ghost runner on second. While there was much to celebrate after a 7-0 comeback win and taking the series against St. Louis, manager Torey Lovullo’s update on his star outfielder wasn’t exactly ideal.
According to Piecoro, Carroll hyperextended his elbow and will be day to day. Not only does this put another D-Backs player on the shelf — despite a day-to-day ruling — but it happens to be one of their most dynamic players in the lineup.
Carroll has been in a bit of a cold spell, trying to refind his All-Star form at the plate. Friday’s matchup against the Cardinals seemed to be that spark, hitting a game-tying home run late in the game. On Sunday, Carroll went 1-for-4 with a double.

While Lovullo’s update provided some sense of security that his outfielder wouldn’t be gone for too long, with the playoff race tightening and the club still on the fence about being buyers or sellers, every game is a must-win. Without one of their top three in the lineup, that could prove critical as the deadline gets closer and injuries continue to mount.
