PHOENIX — The margin for error is slowly shrinking with each passing game, and the Phoenix Mercury know that all too well.

After Thursday’s narrow 92-89 loss to the Indiana Fever, the Mercury find themselves with little room left to let opportunities pass by as the regular season enters its second half. Every close loss now carries significant weight, and against the Fever, this could be one that lingers.

Phoenix battled for 40 minutes against one of the WNBA’s tougher teams in front of a sold-out crowd, but late turnovers, defensive lapses and a loose-ball foul on the final possession proved costly. Instead of gaining valuable ground, the Mercury couldn’t close out the game they needed to win.

“I was proud of the way we played tonight,” head coach Nate Tibbetts said postgame. “That’s kind of how we’ve been playing, except last game. These are the games that you’ve got to get, and we didn’t get it done tonight. We had some turnovers in the fourth and didn’t get stops. And then, obviously, we didn’t score on that last possession. But it was a hell of a game… It did feel like a playoff game tonight. We’re playing for our playoff lives here to finish the season.”

That urgency reflects where the Mercury currently stand in the playoff race. Phoenix now sits at 8-15, proving there is still more work left to be done. While Tibbetts acknowledged there were positives in the performance, moral victories carry little value as the season rolls on.

That frustration was also evident from star Kahleah Copper, who finished with 22 points in the loss.

When asked by ClutchPoints’ Hayden Cilley about Tibbetts’ comments regarding playing for their playoff lives and where the team stands now, Copper provided a blunt response.

“Of course I have. Not getting too deep, trying to dig our way out.”

For a team fighting to stay in the postseason picture, that mindset has become the reality. The Mercury understand the urgency, but the results have to show up.

That’s why Thursday’s loss stings. The atmosphere matched the stakes, but Phoenix couldn’t capitalize. With games continuing to come rapidly and the playoff picture growing tighter, each missed opportunity shrinks the path forward.

Phoenix has shown they can compete with the league’s best, but that won’t be enough to move them closer to the postseason. With the margin for error shrinking by the game, the Mercury have to find a way to turn these performances into wins before time runs out.

The Mercury head back on the road to take on the Las Vegas Aces on Saturday, July 11, at 3 p.m.
