PHOENIX – A massive change from superstar Devin Booker could highlight fate of last season’s starting big man. ESPN’s Shams Charania reported on Wednesday that the 29-year-old is changing his jersey number from the iconic No. 1 to No. 15 for his father. A moving decision by Booker to idolized both his father and his basketball idol in Kobe Bryant, who had a similar mid-career jersey number change. However, could their be a hidden message behind the number change beyond the sentimental value.

The last person to wear No. 15 was starting center Mark Williams last season, who is now entering free agency. Does Booker changing his number signify that Williams will be leaving Phoenix this Summer?

Could Williams be gone in free agency?

Now, Williams has worn the No. 5 with the Charlotte Hornets for the first three years, making this seem like a non-issue. Until, reports earlier in the week revealed the franchise is in talks with two free agents from last year’s team in Collin Gillespie and Jordan Goodwin. The Suns cap situation is tight, close to the luxury tax and the first apron. Those two are penalties owner Mat Ishbia and general manager Brian Gregory will want to avoid.

Outside of the high tax bill, the aprons would limit Gregory’s ability to make future moves. If Phoenix bring back Gillespie and Goodwin, then those concerns aren’t as daunting. The problems arrive when considering Williams’ projected new deal. The money becomes difficult to fit alongside the other two free agents without facing repercussions.

Williams is a restricted free agent, so the Suns can match any offer from opposing teams. The franchise could have the 24-year-old sign the qualifying offer for next season, pushing back the problem one more season and making Williams an unrestricted free agent. While the jersey numbers news likely is a non-factor in a potential return, the team’s money problems are a serious threat.
