PHOENIX – After having the most healthy season of his career, Phoenix Suns center Mark Williams is once again sidelined. The 24-year-old returned from a 15-game absence from a stress reaction in his left foot to play in four of the team’s final six games. However, for the regular season finale, Williams was listed to have left foot soreness, the same area where he was sidelined for 15 games.

Williams in soft boot, in jeopardy to miss first round:
Before the stress reaction injury, the fourth-year big man had played in 56 out of 61 games, a massive improvement compared to his previous seasons. His games played through the first three years were 43, 19 and 44. Despite putting up impressive counting stats, teams were scared to trade for the young center because of his health history. General manager Brian Gregory pulled the trigger for two late-round first-round picks, and Williams has been stellar for the team.

Williams is averaging 11.7 points and eight rebounds, with 3.1 offensive rebounds. His averages are lower than his previous two seasons, but head coach Jordan Ott is obviously trying to limit Williams minutes to ensure his health. Ott’s system would have the 7’1 big man have the same time on the court as his backup in Oso Ighodaro, both around low 20s minutes.
The precautious was smart, but still wasn’t enough for Williams to stay healthy in time for playoffs. His free agency period this Summer will be an interesting to see if the franchise brings him back despite the poor health late in the season.
