Rookie Tommy Troy was placed on the 10-day injured list with a sprained right AC joint after slamming into the center-field wall at Dodger Stadium while making a running catch against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Troy exited Saturday’s game immediately after the play, and while he recorded the out, it cost the D-Backs another key contributor.
The loss comes as Arizona heads into the second half of the season following a three-game sweep of the reigning World Series champions, gaining much-needed ground in the race for the final National League wild-card spot. Despite injuries and inconsistencies throughout the season, the Diamondbacks are just 2.5 games back of the final postseason berth, making every healthy contributor increasingly important as they resume their playoff push.

Troy, the No. 12 overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft, made his major league debut on May 24 after starting the season with Triple-A Reno. His promotion came as Arizona turned to its young talent to help offset a season filled with injuries, and the 23-year-old quickly showcased the versatility that made him one of the organization’s top prospects.
While Troy’s offensive numbers have been modest, batting .223 with a .299 on-base percentage and a .663 OPS, his value extended beyond the box score. His ability to move around the outfield, along with his speed and athleticism, quickly earned him increased playing time and made him an important piece of Arizona’s roster. Ironically, those same defensive instincts and willingness to make a difficult play may have contributed to the injury.

No corresponding move has been announced to replace Troy, but the Diamondbacks will undoubtedly need to add another player to the roster before opening the second half.
