GLENDALE – In the NFL world, no team is a better punching bag than the Arizona Cardinals. 105-year history of disappointment and year number 106 isn’t looking much better. The franchise is currently slated to hire their 44th head coach in its history, but the team is still a long way from fixing all of their problems.

Pat McAfee and his crew know that it too, as on his own show, the former NFL punter called out Arizona for being in a terrible position compared to its NFC West rivals.

McAfee on Cardinals being in “terrible” position:

All three of the Cardinals division rivals made the playoffs and won a game. The NFC championship is clash between the Seattle Seahawks and the Los Angeles Rams, while the San Francisco 49ers can blame injuries from falling a part in the divisional round. However, Arizona has nothing to hang its hat on, recording the most losses in a single-season with 14.

Arizona Cardinals owner Michael Bidwill speaks to the press from the Arizona Cardinals training center in Tempe after the decision to fire head coach Jonathan Gannon on Jan. 5, 2026.

The third overall pick in the 2026 draft is a nice consolation prize, but the turmoil at quarterback puts a damper on that. The Cardinals are out of range of selecting their next quarterback, which makes any possible coaching candidates turn away from the organization because of the uncertain future.

McAfee is just one of the many experts, analysts or sports personalities to point out that Arizona is one of the worst NFL job openings in the league. The firing of Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott makes it 10 head coaching job opportunities, and the Cardinals have a serious case of being below other teams like the Tennessee Titans, Cleveland Browns and more.
