GLENDALE – The recent saga between the Arizona Cardinals and quarterback Kyler Murray has been a fascinating one. Head coach Jonathan Gannon has kept Murray’s injury status close to his chest, which isn’t uncommon for the third-year coach. However, after many reports indicated that the two-time Pro Bowler would be healthy after bye week, only for Murray to be placed on injury reserve shortly after Week 9 game vs. the Dallas Cowboys.
The prowess of backup quarterback Jacoby Brissett has made the decision to go back to the former number one overall pick a difficult one for the franchise. The confusion in Murray’s rehab process has led to many rightfully questioning the seven-year Cardinals quarterback future with the franchise, with ESPN’s Adam Schefter providing an update.

Murray and Cardinals will hold discussions about future:
Schefter reported on Saturday that Murray and Arizona will have conversations about their future partnership moving forward. These discussions will likely happen after the 2025 season, as it’ll give the organization a better understanding of how to react to the outcome of these talks. At minimum Murray won’t be able to return until the next month or two because of him being placed on IR.
The 28-year-old will have a base salary of $22.8 million in 2026 and $19.5 million the subsequent year. If Murray era in the Valley was over, a trade would give the Cardinals $10.7 million in dead cap space, while releasing him would be $50.5 million.

No question teams would be interested in trading for Murray, but Arizona shouldn’t be too quick to dump off the cornerstone of its franchise for the entire 2020’s.
The final nine games of the season will likely inform general manager Monti Ossenfort, Gannon and Murray about how these Summer discussions will go. If the Cardinals can make a playoff push, then Murray is likely gone, but if the Brissett magic wears off, it’ll give the 5’10 quarterback some leverage in these conversations.
