The Sun Devils took an early 16-12 lead against the Eagles after the first quarter, with Marley Washenitz scoring seven points. Arizona State then opened the second quarter on a 5-2 run before Coppin State cut the run with Paris McBride’s two free throws midway through the quarter.

Although the Eagles managed to get within two with a minute left in the first half, ASU’s Last-Tear Po’a’s last-minute tip shot helped the team take a 29-25 lead into halftime.

Coppin State went on a 9-3 run of its own to start the second half to take its first lead of the game. However, ASU was able to get within three after Gabby Elliott’s jump shot to send the third quarter.

Arizona State rallied to start the fourth quarter, retaking the lead with an 11-3 run. However, the Eagles quickly responded to tie the game and both teams exchanged leads throughout the final quarter.

The Sun Devils would take the lead on Elliott’s two free throws mid-way through the quarter and didn’t surrender it the rest of the game. They are now 1-0 to begin the season under Miller’s leadership.

“I knew we would take a little while to knock off the rust and calm the jitters,” Miller said post-game, regarding the team’s late-game run. “I didn’t know it was gonna take three quarters, but we scored 29 in the first half and 27 in the fourth quarter. I like a little bit of those fourth-quarter runs. But our defense kept us in it for three quarters.”

Arizona State faces Eastern Washington on Saturday, Nov. 8, at 2 p.m.
