It was a pitchers’ duel last night between Shohei Ohtani and Brandon Pfaadt, and it very well could be one again as the D-Backs’ Ryne Nelson takes on the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Blake Snell. Nelson comes into Wednesday night’s matchup with a lot on his shoulders as the D-Backs remain only 1.0 game out of an NL Wild Card spot. Arizona is now tied with the Cincinnati Reds, as they both sit a game behind the New York Mets. Every game matters, and Arizona surely realizes that after a gritty and grind-it-out victory over its rival, the Los Angeles Dodgers. The D-Backs currently hold a tie-breaker over the New York Mets, but not the Cincinnati Reds.

Arizona D-Backs Geraldo Perdomo (2) celebrates after hitting the game-winning RBI-single to defeat the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-4 in the ninth inning at Chase Field in Phoenix on Sept. 23, 2025.

Ryne Nelson has pitched against the Dodgers twice during this 2025 season, both coming all the way back in May. In his first outing, Nelson only pitched 2.0 innings without allowing a hit when he was in a reserve role. Nelson did pitch 5.0 innings against this Dodgers team and only allowed three hits and one earned run 10 days later. If Nelson can keep the command of his four-seam fastball, slider, and cutter, Los Angeles might not be able to find a lot of opportunities.

It’s all hands on deck for the D-Backs after a long season full of injuries and uncertainty. Yet, they still have a chance. This story is one D-Backs fans have seen before, especially with their rival. If Arizona can keep up its consistency and momentum by winning a crucial series over the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Snakes might just be ready to strike.
