According to Arizona Sports on X (formerly Twitter), Lovullo wants the 23-year-old to continue to have at-bats in the last stretch of the season. While he hasn’t ruled out the possibility of Lawlar playing on the field for the rest of the year, Lovullo wants to work on rebuilding his foundation.

“I want [Lawlar] to play, I want him to be on the field,” Lovullo said, according to Arizona Sports. “I want him to be as good as everybody has been.”

Lawlar hasn’t found his groove defensively, committing four errors since being called back up by the D-Backs on Aug. 29. One error was a wild throw while trying to field a hit and make a play to first baseman Tyler Locklear, who was injured attempting to catch the ball during a Sept. 7 game against the Boston Red Sox.

“This is real stuff,” the D-Backs manager said. “This is big boy stuff and we gotta figure it out. While we’re in it, I’m gonna focus [him] mostly as a DH… For right now, I want to just give him the at-bats and the DH-ing.”

After a slow start on offense since his call-up, Lawlar has been slowly getting better with his plate discipline. The D-Backs infielder is batting .158 with five RBI and two stolen bases this year. While he’s only had 57 ABs this season, his recent games have shown promise that he’ll only get better the longer he spends in the majors.

However, the D-Backs are prioritizing their postseason aspirations and want to put the best possible product on the field, especially defensively.

The Diamondbacks wrap up their three-game series against the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday before hosting the Los Angeles Dodgers for another three-game series starting Tuesday, Sept. 23.
