Akoa Makani has been a catalyst for the Mercury this season on both sides of the ball. In 34 games this season, she has averaged 8.1 points, 2.2 rebounds, 2.6 assists and shooting 40.6% from beyond the arc.

The 24-year-old rookie landed at No. 13 on ESPN’s rankings.

“Most WNBA fans didn’t know much about Akoa Makani, but have watched as she has adjusted well to the league,” said. ESPN’s Michael Voepel.

Phoenix head coach Nate Tibbetts has been impressed with Akoa Makani’s professionalism and her performances throughout the year.

“[Akoa Makani] puts a lot of pressure on herself,” he said post-game on Aug. 22, according to the team’s recording. “She’s a perfectionist, but she’s had a special year.”

As her rookie season is coming to a close, Akoa Makani has learned many lessons grinding in the WNBA — especially about the hard work it takes.

“Just that it takes time and you just have to be patient and put in the work in,” she said post-game on Aug. 22, according to the team’s notes. “It’s hard and you have to believe it’s going to pay off. Just have to keep working hard and focus on one game at a time.”

With the regular season nearing its end, Akoa Makani hopes to build on her impressive rookie year and help lead the Mercury to a fourth WNBA title in the playoffs.
