The first problem for Gregory to address is to find the team’s next head coach. The search has already begin, and Gregory has highlighted, despite moving to a different position, James Jones’ input on the next head coach is important.

Suns Gregory on his relationship with Jones:

“I think we’re fortunate to have James stay in that senior advisory role,” Gregory said. “He’s gonna lean in and help with the Player 15 Group with the Suns and with Mercury. Again, I think our relationship will only continue to grow on the professional and on the personal level because he’s a heck of a guy, and I’m looking forward to that.”

Gregory continued about his respect for Jones is “incredible” and values the former seven-year Suns general manager. Jones and guard Devin Booker were called out by name on their input being the “main focus” for Phoenix’s next head coach.

Jones hired Monty Williams, who led the team to its first Finals run since 1993. The 41-year-old former NBA player has a great eye for coaching hires, despite the past two flaring out for the organization. Gregory and Jones will talk to a minimum of 14-15 candidates looking for the next leader of the franchise.
