The D-Backs roster will have a new face that fans will be happy to see, as Hampson returns. After an opt-out of his minor league spring deal, Hampson will come back to the Diamondbacks as he beats out Ildemaro Vargas. Vargas will be sent down to the minor league camp as a result. Hampson was fighting for one of the last utility player spots on this team, as it opened up when Kevin Newman left for the Los Angeles Dodgers (gross), as well as an unfortunate injury to Blaze Alexander.
Hampson definitely benefited from the opportunity, as he was batting .300/.396/.771 in 40 at-bats. His breakout spring training also included three stolen bases, eight RBI’s, and showed his defensive abilities that he is known for.
This contract is an interesting one. If players do not make the Opening Day roster, it allows them to go to another Major League club for an opportunity rather than be sent down to the minors. Something ironically Kevin Newman did last season after he did his procedural opt-out in the 2024 MLB season.

Garrett Hampson on making the Opening Day Roster:
“I signed here knowing… in my mind, that it was a really good fit.” Fans over social media definitely felt the same way, and seemed elated that Garrett Hampson is back. He seemed to have had a fire in him all spring training, and hopefully it will translate to the big leagues. Welcome to the team kid, we all are excited to see what the future holds.
