TEMPE – The first Arizona State men’s basketball player to enter the transfer portal has been revealed, and it’s a huge blow to the program’s future. Freshman guard Joson Sanon plans to enter the transfer portal, according to ESPN’s Jeff Borzello. Sanon was one of the few bright spots at ASU this season after the program finished the season 3-16 in its last 19 games. The freshman guard averaged 11.9 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.0 assists in 28.3 minutes for the Sun Devils and could force head coach Bobby Hurley to pivot.

Sanon was a top 25 recruit in the 2025 class and had offers to all the blueblood programs across the nation. The Massachusetts native reclassified to the 2024 class and originally committed to the University of Arizona before flipping to its interstate rival, Arizona State. Hurley landed a highly-touted four-star prospect to help the Sun Devils succeed in its first season in the Big 12.

The plan failed, with many Sun Devils’ incoming transfers dealing with injuries and leaving star freshman Sanon and center Jayden Quaintance falling short of the team’s expectation of going 13-19 overall. ASU’s season isn’t over yet, as it will play in the Crown Basketball tournament. It is unsure if Sanon will play, but it could be likely that the freshman played his last game wearing the maroon and gold.
