Arizona Diamondbacks backup first baseman Pavin Smith, was removed from Friday’s Spring Training game with an untimely right wrist contusion.

He was taken out of the game in the 4th inning, leaving the field after going 0-2 with a strikeout. The injury might have come during a play at first base, where it looked like Corbin Burnes threw near the runner, in turn causing the baserunner to make contact with Smiths’ wrist. Luckily, it doesn’t seem too serious, and sounds like it’s possible for Smith to be able to play if needed for opening day.

Pavin, “Pookie”, Smith.. as some fans on X are calling him as of recent.. has a long tenure with the Diamondbacks. Smith, drafted in 2017, debuted in 2020 and has been back and forth between the majors and triple A. His time in Reno and Arizona definitely show that he has the capability to be a major leaguer, if the consistency is there. With former Diamondback first baseman Christian Walker leaving for Houston this offseason, he will back up newcomer Josh Naylor, as well as being a designated hitter at times.

Torey Lovullo on Pavin Smith’s status:

We have gotten some good news though from head coach Torey Lovullo on Pavin Smith’s status. He mentioned he is day to day as well as no imaging planned as of right now, but will monitor how he feels in the morning. It is worth noting that this is the same wrist Pavin Smith had surgery on in 2023, so the Diamondbacks staff felt it was necessary to take him out as precautionary purposes.

All hands on deck are needed as previously mentioned in other articles, as the D-Backs try to conquer the National League like they did two years ago. That means you, Pookie.
