PHOENIX – Grand Canyon women’s basketball team started the year 2-2. The Lopes were coming off a disappointing end to the 2023-2024 season, where they lost in the first game of the WAC tournament. The end of that season for GCU looked to be affecting the beginning of this season. Fourth-year head coach Molly Miller had a choice, whithering from the first sign of resistance or power through. Miller chose the latter and is making history, leading the program to 29 straight wins and one win away from its first NCAA Tournament appearance ever.

The Lopes are 31-2, going 16-0 in conference play. Saturday will be Miller’s first shot at punching her ticket to March Madness against UT Arlington, which GCU won the only matchup this season 82-69 on February 15th. The 38-year-old has a 295-54 record since taking the mantle in 2020. Before Miller, the Lopes had one 20+ win season in their history, but after her hiring, they’ve had four straight.

GCU has the best scoring offense and defense in the WAC and finished with a conference +/—of +20.65, double the amount of second-place Abilene Christian. Miller has made the program a premier program not only in the WAC but in the nation. If they can clinch their spot in the tournament, GCU will be an upset team to watch.

Miller’s success this season has created a buzz around her possibly finding a job at a bigger university like Arizona State. The university has an opening after firing Natasha Adair, and the hire would be a massive win for ASU. For now, Miller is focused on her players and the Lopes making it to their first NCAA tournament in program history.
