PHOENIX – 3 pm EST marked the end of the NBA trade deadline, and 3:01 pm EST marked the beginning of the buyout market. The new CBA made trades for contenders and teams above the 2nd apron more difficult, thus making the buyout market extremely valuable.

The Phoenix Suns will be one of the teams expected to be busy during the buyout market to try and salvage their season with the three-headed monster of Devin Booker, Kevin Durant, and Bradley Beal. The franchise will need to be strategic with the buyout market as they currently sit above the 2nd apron, meaning that the Suns can’t sign anyone making more than the Mid-Level Exception ($12.8 million) before they were released.

Regardless of the cap implications, there is still a vast pool of valuable talent in the buyout market.

5. Seth Curry (Salary: $2.1 Million)

The Charlotte Hornets have already unloaded their young, talented centers Nick Richards and Mark Williams for draft capital, leaving 34-year-old Seth Curry not fitting the franchise’s timeline. In 41 games, Curry has averaged 5.4 points on 45.1% from beyond the arc. The Suns are 4th in 3-point percentage but only 15th in 3-point attempts. Adding Curry could help spread the floor for the Suns, allowing an open shooter on the wing when Durant or Booker get doubled.

4. Tre Jones (Salary: $9.1 Million)

The Bulls currently have six point guards on their roster. Lonzo Ball just signed an extension and Josh Giddey is seen as a building block for the future, leaving Tre Jones as a viable option. Jones is only 25 years old, and while his numbers aren’t as impressive since being demoted to the bench in favor of Chris Paul, has shown flashes when given the starting role, averaging 10+ points a game the previous two seasons. The Suns could match the two Jones brothers to make a stellar point guard rotation.

3. Daniel Theis (Salary: $2.1 million)

The Oklahoma City Thunder will waive the veteran big man Daniel Theis, who could be a substantial pickup for the Suns. Theis is a journeyman being a part of six NBA franchises, but every stop is productive. He is a winning player whose defensive versatility and ability to spread the floor make him a highly coveted asset for any contender. Pelicans have had a down year with nothing to play for, leaving Theis’ 4.3 points and 4.3 rebounds a game looking plain at face value. However, if given the opportunity, Theis could be a solid backup center for the Suns, who need a veteran presence after the departure of Jusuf Nurkic.

2. PJ Tucker (Salary $11.5 million)

The 38-year-old PJ Tucker hasn’t played all season because of a disagreement about his role with the Clippers. After a detour that almost saw Tucker return to Miami, he finds himself on a rebuilding Raptors team. The Suns could take a flyer on the veteran to find an intense defensive identity that the team has lacked all season. Tucker’s offensive game has lost a step over the past few years, but his defensive prowess could supersede that and be worth consideration for the Suns.

1. Reggie Jackson (Salary: $2.1 million)

Reggie Jackson is almost certainly going to be waived by the Wizards, and when he does will be an offensive spark for whatever teams sign him. In 31 games, Jackson averaged 4.4 points and 1.5 assists in limited minutes with the 76ers. The 35-year-old is a champion and, if given more minutes, could help with the Suns bench scoring that is ranked 20th in the NBA.
