The Phoenix Suns and Jimmy Butler have been intertwined in the news over the past week after a report came out that Butler had Arizona as a possible trade destination.

Sending social media into a frenzy last Wednesday, Shams Charania of ESPN revealed the info before it was quickly shut down by Butler’s agent Bernie Lee. Despite Lee rejecting Charania’s claims, that hasn’t stopped trade propositions from fans and analysts involving the Suns in acquiring the six-time NBA All-Star.

The popular idea being thrown around is that the Suns would deal Bradley Beal to the Miami Heat, Butler’s current team, in a trade. The Suns have a few draft picks they can also add, but adding Beal would work with Butler’s contract.

What makes this deal difficult to execute is that Beal has a no-trade clause and would need to accept it himself. There is no indication that he wants to leave Phoenix and can just stay put, ultimately ruling out any possibility of the Suns getting Butler.

When sharing his opinion on the idea of Butler in the Valley, ESPN analyst and former University of Arizona star Richard Jefferson highlighted how it is Beal who has all the control if the Heat and Suns were to discuss any deal with him in it.

“How do they get Jimmy Butler, how do the Phoenix Suns get Jimmy Butler? This ain’t just about what Jimmy Butler wants, it’s also about, ‘Hey Bradley [Beal], we’re sending you someplace else.’ I don’t see one draft asset, I don’t see other young assets,” Richardson said. “I know Devin Booker and Kevin Durant, they ain’t the people that they are talking about.

“Jimmy is an elite defensive player in my opinion. He is a tough, gritty player. You see the numbers he puts up, the rebounds, the assists. He’s versatile, he can still go. Do I think he should be the No. 1 guy? I still think he has that ability.”

Another side to consider is if the Heat have any interest in Beal since there is no information as to whether Miami would even entertain such a trade with the Suns. Charania also listed the Dallas Mavericks, Houston Rockets and Golden State Warriors as other teams Butler is reportedly open to be traded to.

Beal has missed 10 games this season with an elbow injury, left calf strain and is currently dealing with right knee swelling. Averaging 17.8 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game this season, he was sidelined for Phoenix’s last two matchups against the Utah Jazz and Portland Trail Blazers.

The NBA trade deadline isn’t until Feb. 6, 2025, so there will be more rumblings about Butler and if he stays in Miami or is traded elsewhere.
