Just before ASU began preparation for its clash against Iowa State in the Big 12 Championship Game on Saturday, the Sun Devils learned that they will be without one of their most impactful offensive players when trying to win the conference title.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! At Monday’s press conference, Arizona State head coach Kenny Dillingham stated that wide receiver Jordyn Tyson will be out indefinitely due to an injury he suffered during the 49-7 win over Arizona in the Territorial Cup.
“Jordyn’s going to be out indefinitely, unfortunately,” Dillingham said. “I don’t want to give a complete three, four-month out timetable but he is going to be out indefinitely.”
Tyson finished with eight catches for 143 yards and one touchdown in the victory until he was brutally tackled and struggled to get up late in the third quarter. After receiving medical attention, he then reemerged on the sidelines before the conclusion of the game with a sling on his left arm and celebrated winning over the Sun Devils’ biggest rival.
The Colorado transfer racked up 10 touchdowns and 1,101 yards from 75 receptions in the Big 12 regular season. His 10 receiving scores were tied for second-most in the conference with Colorado’s LaJohntay Wester.
To have his name engrained in the history books, Tyson’s 75 catches tied Jaelen Strong for seventh all-time in ASU single-season history. Strong had 75 receptions back in the 2013 season for the Sun Devils.
With Tyson out and not having a timetable for a return, Dillingham, offensive coordinator Marcus Arroyo, wide receiver coach Hines Ward and others will have to get crafty with their options at the position vs. Iowa State. Xavier Guillory, Melquan Stovall and Derek Eusebio would all be players to look at who receive bigger roles now that Tyson is sidelined. Guillory caught two passes for 41 yards and a touchdown, Eusebio scored a 63-yard touchdown and Stovall hauled in three receptions for 35 yards in the Territorial Cup.
Since the Cyclones’ run defense ranks No. 14 in the Big 12, expect Arizona State running back Cam Skattebo to be utilized even more now that quarterback Sam Leavitt’s No. 1 receiver Tyson is out for the foreseeable future. Skattebo mustered 177 yards and scored three touchdowns from 21 carries vs. Arizona.
The Big 12 Championship Game is on Saturday at 10 a.m. MST in Arlington, Texas.
