The AP Top 25 poll was released on Sunday and the Sun Devils improved two spots from No. 14 to No. 12 after destroying in-state rival Arizona and reclaiming the Territorial Cup on Saturday. ASU is on a five-game winning streak and has picked up crucial wins over the likes of Arizona, BYU and Kansas State.
Kansas State was ranked No. 16 by the CFP committee before Arizona State beat the Wildcats 24-14. The Sun Devils then took down BYU 28-23 who was No. 14 and dismantled Arizona. ASU went from No. 21 to No. 14 to No. 12 after No. 6 Miami was stunned 42-38 by unranked Syracuse.
Last week, the CFP committee ranked ASU No. 16, two spots worse than what the AP determined.
Arizona State has a chance to not only make the CFP but could earn a first-round bye if it manages to beat Iowa State in the Big 12 Championship game next Saturday. Iowa State (10-2, 7-2), who jumped up one spot to No. 16 on the AP poll, beat Kansas State 29-21 to be able to make the conference title game and face the Sun Devils.
Though it has been eliminated from contention for the conference championship, BYU (10-2, 7-2) rose two spots to No. 17 after snapping its two-game losing skid with a 30-18 victory over Houston. Colorado (9-3, 7-2) pumped Oklahoma State 52-0 and is No. 20 as a result.
Projected to finish rock bottom of the Big 12 according to the preseason media poll, ASU has proved the doubters wrong and will see how many more tricks it has up its sleeve before the season ultimately comes to an end. Arizona State will clash with Iowa State on Dec. 7 at 10 p.m. MST in Arlington, Texas.
