Why Cardinals coach Nick Rallis says this QB is “playing phenomenal”

The Arizona Cardinals are coming off a Week 12 loss to the Seahawks, the team’s four-game winning streak ended, and a different perspective took place for the coaching staff with a suddenly too-hot-to-stop team slowly cooled down.

Jonathan Gannon discussed the matchup against the Minnesota Vikings in his day-after interview and described Sunday’s upcoming game to be an environment that even Lumen Field could not compete with, Gannon believes this opponent in the dome is tougher for a duel and the Cardinals will have little to no crowd support.

“It’s in a dome. It’s loud. It’ll be packed out,” Gannon said. “There will be no Cardinals fans. They’ll all be Vikings fans there. … It’s a great place to play, a good environment. It’s going to be a tough place to play.”

Perhaps the Cardinals will have the upper hand with Gannon, and others on the staff using experience coaching in Minnesota. Undoubtedly there is no discounting the talent the Vikings team is stacked with and undeniably the Vikings team is doing well with Sam Darnold as lead.

A once-counted-out quarterback, not many predicted Darnold would lead the Vikings to a successful record. Gratefully for the Vikings Darnold has fit in within coach Kevin O’Connell’s system quite easily, Darnold has multiple options when it comes to the offensive depth between Aaron Jones in the running game and Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, and T.J. Hockenson in the passing game.

“The quarterback is playing phenomenal,” defensive coordinator Nick Rallis said. “There are weapons all over. They’re a well-balanced attack with a good scheme and a quarterback that’s played at a high level. There’s a lot of challenges that go into that and whatever you want to try and take away, there’s going to be stress at other spots.”

Watch: Cardinals rookie possible debut

Rallis gave Darnold a nod as he plans for the upcoming match, with Jalen Thompson questionable and still no clear date on when Darius Robinson will make his debut, but if it happens this game, it will not hurt the Cardinals to have additional reinforcements. Minnesota’s team is the top-ranked defense against the run, allowing only 75 yards per game, with Brian Flores running the Viking’s defense the Cardinals’ offense will have to stay focused to protect Kyler Murray.

The bottom line for the 6-5 Cardinals the team sounds as if holistically they did not take preparation lightly and are ready for a battle against the phenomenal deep offense favored 9-2 Vikings on Sunday at 11 a.m.
