Known for his signature step-back 3-pointer and sharpshooting, ASU icon and Los Angeles Clippers guard James Harden made extraordinary history in the NBA, doing so once again vs. the Utah Jazz.

In the Clippers’ 116-105 victory on Sunday, Harden scored his 2,974th 3-pointer of his star-studded career with 6:09 left in the first quarter, passing Ray Allen for second all-time in NBA history. Golden State Warriors superstar Steph Curry is the overwhelming leader in 3s made, 3,782.

Seeing Harden break a record of that magnitude, one of his former Oklahoma City Thunder and Brooklyn Nets teammates Kevin Durant praised “The Beard” for what he has been able to do for the sport of basketball for so long that has seen him accomplish the feat.

“Congrats JH on reaching an amazing accomplishment, all the work that you put in has paid off. You inspire so many people around the world with how you play,” Durant said. “You’ve been a great teammate, great friend. I love you brother, keep grinding.”

Both Durant and Harden were on the Thunder from 2009-2012 after Harden was drafted out of Arizona State with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2009 NBA Draft. While they have also been teammates at numerous NBA All-Star Games, the two also reunited on the Nets in 2021-22 and still have a strong friendship.

From playing two seasons (2007-09) as a Sun Devil to Tempe to becoming a household name, Harden has put in the work to have as much longevity as he has in being a premier shooter in the league. He has gone on to be the 2018 NBA MVP, a 10-time All-Star, a six-time All-NBA First Team honoree, a three-time NBA scoring champion, two-time assist leader and had his name enshrined in the NBA 75th Anniversary Team.

While Curry is astronomically in front of everyone else who has ever played in the league because of having practically unlimited range to shoot from, Harden has carved out a 16-year career thus far and will look to keep leading the Clippers for as long as he can.
