National League Wild Card Race to be decided in Monday’s doubleheader

Arizona Diamondbacks' Randal Grichuk (15) slides in safely to score a run against the San Diego Padres at Chase Field in Phoenix, Ariz. on Sep 29, 2024.

With both the Arizona Diamondbacks and New York Mets winning on Saturday, and the Atlanta Braves falling to the Kansas City Royals, the National League Wild Card race remains undecided. The final two teams won’t be determined until after tomorrow’s doubleheader between the Braves and Mets.

The Diamondbacks have concluded their regular season with 89 wins. Meanwhile, the Mets sit at 88 wins with two games left on the schedule. Since the Mets hold the tiebreaker over Arizona, a single win in the doubleheader will clinch their spot in the postseason and eliminate the Diamondbacks.

The Braves are in a similar position, also entering Monday with 88 wins. Holding the tiebreaker over the Diamondbacks, Atlanta needs just one victory to secure their postseason berth.

For Arizona to reach the playoffs, one team must be swept in tomorrow’s doubleheader. A split between the Braves and Mets would result in both teams moving on and the Diamondbacks missing the playoffs.

As for how the Braves and Mets will approach the doubleheader, much remains uncertain. While both teams are division rivals, they also have their own playoff aspirations. For example, if the Braves win the first game, they may opt to rest their starters in Game 2, potentially handing a win to the Mets. On the other hand, they could choose to go all out, determined to prevent their rival from advancing to the postseason.

The first game of the doubleheader is scheduled for 10:10 AM in Atlanta. Neither team has announced their starting pitchers.

The Diamondbacks, meanwhile, will be watching the games together as a team, staying ready for a potential plane ride for a game on Tuesday. If they do advance, Arizona will face the Milwaukee Brewers in the first round, the same team they eliminated in two games last season.
